Sister Marie de St Pierre was concerned to encourage Reparation to God for blasphemies endured. In light of this she wrote powerfully about the face of Christ and drew attention to the importance of the face as a revelation of the person behind it. The joys and sorrows, achievements and misfortunes are all cleared shown on the human face. Indeed, we often say that the course which a persons life has taken may be seen in the lines and expression of their face.

‘Let us take the example of one particular man, who for his outstanding deeds of merit had earned for himself a distinguished name. But look at this man while he is in the presence of his enemies. Although they do not bruise him physically by laying hands on him, yet by uttering their slanderous accusations and sarcastic remarks against him, instead of offering titles of honour which are justly his due, they indeed injure him most painfully.

Now take notice what passes over the face of this injured man as he is being thus mistreated. Is it not evident to you that all the outrageously wicked words coming from the lips of his enemies have struck this man direct blows on his face? His whole facial expression undergoes a painful change as the insults flung at him become reflected in every line of his features which tell all too clearly that he is enduring real torments.

Look closely at the way this man’s face turns red, which is only natural since he is burning with shame and confusion. Feeling cheap and disgraced, he suffers more cruelly from this embarrassment covering his face than he would suffer from various other pains that might be inflicted on different parts of his body. Well this is but a faint picture of what the adorable face of our Saviour endures when it is outraged by the blasphemies of the wicked.

…visualize this same man in the presence of his friends, who, hearing of the insults to which he had been subjected by the insults of his enemies, at once gather around him that they might undo the wrongs he was made to endure. Joining in one voice they all begin to treat him with the dignity which he deserves, speaking highly and openly of his achievements, recommending his great deeds and rendering honour to his distinguished name as they address him by his special titles.

Now watch the face of this man at it begins to take on an expression of sweetness, which reflects his appreciation of the praise and honour accorded to him. Soon happiness is seen resting on his brow, as momentarily it spreads over his whole face, making it radiant with contentment. Observe the joy sparkling in his eyes, and finally a blissful smile parts his lips, for behold, the entire face of this man has become transformed. In short, the faithful friends of this man have not only wiped away the burning shame on his face, outraged by the insults of his enemies, but by their unanimous praises, they have given him so full a measure of honour that it by far surpassed the former shame that he endured in his countenance. And that is precisely what the friends of our Lord Jesus Christ do for Him by the work of Reparation. The honour which they give to His Name is seen reflected in His brow and in His facial expression, but especially is the Holy Face in the Blessed Sacrament made radiant with joy by means of Reparation. I comprehend that as blasphemers cruelly afflict the Holy Face, so those who make Reparation delight and glorify it. But what I see as I never saw before is the striking connection between a person’s face and his name, for the face reflects either his honour or his dishonour.  extract from: ‘The Golden Arrow’ Tan Books pp188f.

Chaplet or Crown of the Holy Face I

(Sr. Marie de St Pierre: Carmelite)

Said in honour of the Five Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and to ask of God the triumph of His Holy Church and the downfall of her enemies. Revealed to Sister Marie of Saint Pierre, (1816-1848) a Carmelite of Tours St Athanasius stated that the devils, when being asked which verse in Holy Scripture they feared the most, replied: ’Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: Let them that hate Him flee before His Face’ (Psalm 67:1). They added that this passage always compelled them to take flight.

A variant of this chaplet recalls the Seven Last Words from the Cross and the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady

On each single bead say: Gloria Patri … My Jesus, Mercy! in honour of the Seven Words of Our Lord from the Cross & the Seven Dolours  in honour of Our Lady. As each is said, contemplate one of the Seven Last Words of Our Lord & one of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady:

1. Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. (Lk 23:24) 2. Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. (Lk 23:43) 3. Woman, behold thy son; son, behold thy mother. (Jn19:26f) 4. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Mt 27:46. Mk 15:34) 5. I thirst. (Jn 19:28) 6. It is finished. (Jn 19:30) 7. Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. ((Lk 23:46)

The Seven Dolours: 1.The prophecy of Simeon that a sword would pierce Our Lady’s heart. 2.The flight of the Holy Family from Herod’s threats into Egypt. 3.The loss of the Holy Child in the Temple. 4.On meeting our Lord on the way to Calvary. 5.Standing at the foot of the Cross. 6.At the taking down of Christ from the Cross. 7.At His burial.

Veronica’s Veil

The beautiful tradition of the woman who ministered to Jesus as He walked the way of the Cross is not supported by scripture. However, the act of loving service is consistent with that of other brave women who did not cease to serve the Lord even when the Apostles failed Him. The woman who broke the alabaster jar of costly ointment and poured it over the Saviour’s Head and the women who went early to the tomb, expecting rebuke from the soldiers, are amongst those who witness to this scriptural tradition of service to Christ.

The ancient and venerable tradition of the imprint of the Divine Face upon the towel used by the woman who wiped His suffering face, has an honoured place as a story which inspires a personal response to that suffering and encourages Christians to ‘wipe the Face of Christ’ wherever they encounter suffering. Through the centuries this devotion has continued particularly amongst women saints. Saint Gertrude the Great (1256-1301) received a revelation in which Our Lord says: ‘The soul who desires to persevere in virtue, let her take flight to my bosom. However, if she desires to advance further and to rise even higher on the wings of this desire, let her soar with the swiftness of the eagle, until she poises herself close to My Countenance, sustained as a Seraph on the wings of noble charity.’ Saint Mechtilde and blessed Angela of Foligno express the same sentiments in their writings.

Saint Bonaventure, known as the Seraphic Doctor writes: ‘That Face, venerated by the Patriarchs, desire of the Angels, delight of heaven, was defiled by spittle from vile mouths, struck by the blows of the inhuman, and, so as to augment the mockery, was covered by a veil by the sacrilegious. The Face of the Lord of all creation was struck as if He were an abject slave. And He, serene of countenance and speaking softly, gently had admonished one of the servants of the High Priest who had struck Him:”If I have spoken evil, tell Me where I have erred; if however, I have spoken the truth, why do you strike Me?” O Jesus, honest and humble, which devout soul seeing and hearing these things can contain her tears or conceal the compassion within her?’ (‘Tree of Life’ by Saint Bonaventure)

Bonaventure continues this theme in ‘The Mystic Vine’: ‘Behold the Face of your Christ, O Christian soul, and lift not your eyes without tears to His torments; lift not your contrite heart without compassion, and behold how much affliction He endures, to seek you, to find you. Open wide your eyes to behold the Face of Jesus. Hear Him attentively! If ever, in inexpressible suffering, He utters a word, hide it when you have heard it as the most precious treasure in the coffer of your heart.’

Other ‘Veronicas’

‘All those who honour My Face in a spirit of reparation will by so doing, perform the office of the pious Veronica …’

The growth of the devotion to the Holy Face which developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries may be described as a movement in which the Carmelite Order played a significant part.

Sister Marie-Pierre (1816-1848) became an extraordinary channel for this devotion. Marie-Pierre was a Carmelite at Tours in France. She received significant visions of Our Lord urging reparation to His Face. He dictated to her the Golden Prayer and gave her Three Promises.

Her Visions

I On 24 November 1843 Marie-Pierre heard the Lord speak:

‘The earth is covered with crimes. The violation of the first three Commandments of God has offended My Father. The Holy Name of God blasphemed and the Holy Day of the Lord profaned, fills up the measure in iniquities. These sins have risen unto the Throne of God and provoked His wrath which will soon burst forth if His justice be not appeased. At no time have these crimes reached such a pitch.’

II On 30 October 1845 further words were given:

‘The face of France has become hideous in the sight of My Father; it provokes Him to justice; offer Him therefore, the face of His Only Son in whom He is well pleased, to draw His mercy down on France, without which she will be chastised. Here is France’s salvation; that is to say, in the Face of the Saviour.’ Jesus further likened the sacrileges of blasphemy and profanation of Sunday to a poisoned arrow and dictated to the nun the prayer which is known to us as the Golden Arrow Prayer. It encapsulates the praises due to heaven in reparation for the poison of sacrilege.

III  On 22 November 1846 Sister Marie-Pierre heard Jesus saying:

‘…The treasure of My Holy Face in itself possesses such tremendous value that through it all the affairs of My household can be readily settled. Through this Holy Face you will obtain the conversion of many sinners. Nothing that you ask in virtue of the Holy Face will be refused you. Oh, if only you knew how pleasing is the sight of My Face to My Father!’ The Golden Arrow Prayer revealed as an antidote to the ‘arrows’ of blasphemy which wound God: ‘May the Most Holy, Most sacred, Most Adorable, Most Incomprehensible and Ineffable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in heaven on earth and under the earth, By all the creatures of God and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen’

Following the gift of this prayer, Marie-Pierre was granted a vision in which she saw the Sacred Heart of Jesus wounded ‘delightfully’ by the ‘Golden Arrow’ as torrents of grace streamed from It for the conversion of sinners.

The Three Promises for those who honour and adore the Holy Face:

1. By My Holy Face you will work ‘wonders’, appease the anger of God and draw down mercy for the conversion of sinners.

2. Nothing that you ask in virtue of this offering will be refused you! Ah, if you did but know how pleasing is the sight of My Face to My Father!

3. In proportion to your care in repairing the injuries My Face receives from blasphemers, will I take care of yours, which has been disfigured by sin; I will restore it to My likeness and render it as beautiful as when it had just left the baptismal font.

Sister Marie-Pierre wrote: Our Lord promised me that all those who defend His cause in this work of reparation, by words, by prayers or by writing, He will in turn defend before His father: at their death He will purify their souls by effacing all the blots of sin and will restore to them their primitive beauty.

Leo Dupont (1797-1876): The saintly Monsieur Leo Dupont was born into a devout family in Martinique and was sent to both the USA and France to be schooled. He was later to settle in Tours after suffering the loss of his wife. He had promised her that he would raise his daughter in the faith and that she, Henrietta, would be schooled with the Ursulines at Tours. His devotion to the faith was apparent in his involvement with the life of the Church and in his encouragement to others to convert and live the catholic life. In 1837 whilst he was contemplating a picture of Saint Theresa of Avila, the foundress of the Discalced Poor Clares  he decided that he should devote his life to penance and reparation for the sacrileges of society which had lost sight of God. He was often to be seen praying in churches which had been destroyed in the upheavals endured in France during the revolutions and was involved in an association to eradicate blasphemy. He visited La Salette during the visions there and en route visited the Cure D’Ars. Following his return from La Salette his daughter contracted a disease at school and was sent home to die. For some time she had begun to move in fashionable and worldly circles, forgetful of the things of God, so that her father became concerned for her eternal soul. In his love for her he prayed this extraordinary prayer for her eternal rather than temporal future: ‘My God, if You foresee that my daughter will part from You, I ask You to take her with You so that she will not be separated from You’

Such a prayer might be viewed with incredulity today but should be seen in the light of a father’s deep love and concern for the eternal destiny of his daughter. She died of typhoid soon afterwards and the father, tortured by his second loss nevertheless kept his faith and nurtured it. His devotion to God increased and showed itself in help for the poor, the sick, prisoners and anyone in need. Sometimes he would give away the contents of his wallet and even gave away his clothes.

In February 1849 he was instrumental in starting nightly exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in Tours and in less than two months had encouraged seventy four men to come to adore the Sacrament, some after a hard day’s work. He encouraged others to start the devotion in various places and set his heart on the practice for every parish in the world!

Dupont heard of Sister Marie-Pierre and her efforts to spread the devotion to the Sacred Face. Inspired by the Holy Spirit through this example he decided to dedicate his life to furthering this work. He received two copies of the Veil of Veronica from the prioress of the Convent where Marie-Pierre had recently lived and exhibited one of these images in his study with an oil lamp burning perpetually before it. His home soon became a centre of pilgrimage and devotion to the Holy Face and people began to ascribe cures and miracles to the image and the application of oil from the lamp to their skin. In this way the words of Jesus to Marie-Pierre were to bear fruit: ‘I see other Veronicas who will wipe and venerate my Divine Face, which has few adorers’

In 1885 the bishop of Tours gave approval for Leo Dupont to found an Archconfraternity of the Holy Face. In this body such ‘Veronicas’ would flourish. (He himself would be declared Venerable and be known today as ‘The Holy Man of Tours’.) One of the ‘Veronicas’ who joined the Archconfraternity was Therese Martin. She was 12 years of age when she, her two sisters and father joined the Archconfraternity. On 8 September 1890, the day she made her religious profession as a Carmelite she took the name ‘Therese of the Child Jesus’, adding to this the extra title ‘and the Holy Face’. she would later write ‘These words of Isaias: who has believed our report … there is no beauty in him … are the basis of my devotion to the Holy Face, or rather, the basis of my whole spirituality.’

The spirituality of the Carmel at Tours was the wellspring of the devotion at Lisieux. Therese had learned of the devotion through her older sister, Pauline, her ‘little mother’. Pauline had heard the story of the visions through Mother Genevieve, the foundress of their Carmel and Mother had learned it from Tours. She had in fact sent to Tours for mementos of Marie-Pierre and for novena prayers to the Holy Face. Saint Therese’s devotion was inexhaustible. In his last illness she perceived the ‘Suffering Servant’ in her father who had offered himself up to God as a victim. Writing to Celine she speaks of the hidden beauty of Jesus. Behind his downcast eyes she glimpses the beauty of His soul. His blood-stained Face reveals to her His love; she exhorts Celine to contemplate the Eyes which have lost their light; to see the wounds and to look at the Face of Jesus. There she would recognize the immensity of the Divine Love.

Shortly after Saint Therese’s death in 1897 the first photographic image of the Holy Face was to be found on the Holy Shroud of Turin in 1898. It is this image that forms the heart of the further visions granted to Sister Pierina in the twentieth century which are outlined in conjunction with the second devotion to the Holy Face found in this section. This image also has a connection with Saint Therese, as it was Celine, her third sister and fellow Carmelite, who was to paint the picture of the Holy Face of Jesus from the image of the Shroud; an image that was to be mass-produced on small prayer cards and granted indulgences by Pope Pius XI.

Sister Maria Pierina De Micheli (1890 -1945) Daughters of the immaculate conception

The ancient devotion to the Holy Face of Our Lord is rooted in the tradition of Saint Veronica and the towel with which she is reputed to have wiped the Face of Christ as He made His way to Calvary.

Giuseppina de Micheli was born on September 11 1890, the Feast of the Holy Name in Sala, near Milan. She is described as being a competitive and spirited girl but as possessing a nervous disposition. Her religious vocation grew from the time of 3 May 1898 when she first received Holy Communion and further matured until on 15 October 1913 she entered the Congregation of the Daughters of the Immaculate Conception in Milan and took the name Pierina. Then, on 23 May 1915 she made her first religious profession. Her talents were to lead her to high office within the Order. For a brief period between 21 May 1919 and 5 November 1921 she was moved to the House in Argentina, but in 1928 Sister Maria Pierina was recognised as a leader and elected Mother of the House in Milan.

From childhood she had had a great love for the Holy Face and especially as it was now being revealed to the world in the image from the Holy Shroud of Turin. She experienced many mystical encounters with the Holy Face throughout her life. She told of numerous visions of Our Lord and His Mother in which she was urged to make reparation for the many insults suffered by the Lord in His Passion. Traditional devotions focus upon the Five Wounds, the Precious Blood, the Way of the Cross and the Seven Last Words. The ‘Passion’ of Christ is a term encompassing many other blows and insults, spittings and humiliations, betrayals and abandonments. The dishonouring of Jesus through the blasphemous use of His Name and the neglect of His Presence in the Blessed Sacrament only serve to add further to the cruelties of the Passion in every age. Through her visions, Mother Pierina felt encouraged to take up the work of spreading the devotion to the Holy Face in reparation for these blasphemies.

Ist Vision of the Lord: the night of the first Friday in Lent 1936 – On this night Mother Pierina was at prayer when she experienced a vision of Jesus who said to her: ’I will that My Face, which reflects the intimate pains of My Spirit, the suffering and love of My Heart, be more honoured. He who meditates upon Me, honours Me.’

2nd Vision of the Lord: Tuesday in Holy Week 1936 -included a promise: ‘Every time My Face is contemplated I will pour out My love into the hearts of those persons, and by means of My Holy Face the salvation of many souls will be obtained’

3rd Vision of the Lord: the first Tuesday in January 1937- Mother Pierina received further clarification as the Lord said to her: ‘Souls contemplating My Face participate in My Sorrow. They feel the necessity of Love and reparation. Is not this the true devotion to My Heart?’

4th Vision of the Lord: 23 May 1938 – In this year of the Silver Jubilee of the House, Jesus appeared with blood-stained Face telling of His Grief and saying: ‘My beloved, to thee I renew the offering of My Face, in order that thou mayest offer it without ceasing to the Eternal Father. With this offering thou wilt obtain the salvation and sanctification of many souls. When however, thou wilt offer it through My priests, miracles will be worked.’

5th Vision of the Lord: 27 May 1938 – Jesus spoke these words: ‘Contemplate My Face and thou wilt enter into My Heart’s abyss of sorrow. Console Me, and search for souls who sacrifice themselves with Me for the salvation of the world.’

The Vision of the Immaculate Virgin: 31 May 1938 – The experiences became more frequent and more intense until Mother Pierina received a vision of Our Lady bringing to her a scapular bearing the likeness of the Face upon the Holy Shroud of Turin. She was told: ‘This scapular is an armour of defence; a shield of strength; a token of love and mercy which Jesus wishes to give to the world in these times of lust and hatred against God and His Church.’ Diabolical nets are thrown to wrench the faith from hearts; evils abound; true apostles are few; and the remedy is the Holy Face of Jesus.’

The Promises relating to the Scapular

Our Lady went on to instruct Mother Pierina that the Scapular should be worn and a visit made to the Blessed Sacrament, preferably each Tuesday, to make reparation for all the insults against the Holy Face of Jesus. Those who endeavour to do this and also to receive Holy Communion each day are promised that they will: 1. be strengthened in faith. 2. be prompted to defend the faith and quick to overcome all trials, internal and external, and have a peaceful death under the loving gaze of her Divine Son. The Scapular bore a replica of the Face of the Holy Shroud on the obverse with the inscription: ’Illumina, Domine, vultum tuum super nos.’ (Show the Light of Thy Countenance, O Lord, upon us) On the reverse was a radiant Host inscribed with the monogram of the Holy Name: ‘IHS’ surrounded by rays of light with the words: ‘Mane nobiscum, Domine’ (Stay with us Lord).

6th Vision of Jesus 21 November 1938 – Mother Pierina was unsure as to how she should proceed with this commission as she was a Religious under authority, for whom permission to promote a new devotion would prove difficult to have granted. It was during the Nocturnal Adoration in November that Jesus again appeared revealing His Sorrow through the wounds and sufferings of His Holy Face. He revealed that a feast of the Holy Face should be instituted on Shrove Tuesday, the day immediately prior to Ash Wednesday and the day when the faithful make their confession before the Lenten journey. Jesus revealed that a Novena of prayer should precede this feast. ‘… I have given My Heart as the sensible proof of My great love for men, and I give My Face as the sensible object of my grief for the sins of mankind and I desire that it may be honoured by a special feast on the Tuesday of Quinquagesima, a Feast proceeded by a novena in which all the faithful will make reparation with Me, thus uniting and participating in My grief. Mother Pierina encountered great difficulties in producing a scapular and then also many frustrations in her decision to change the scapular to a medal. Eventually she received permission to do so but had no money with which to commission the medal. The remedy proved to be miraculous. One day she found an envelope on her desk containing the 11,200 Lire, the exact amount needed to execute the medal.

7th Vision of the Lord 1939 – The Lord appeared once more to Mother Pierina and requested: ’I desire that My Face be honoured in a special way on Tuesday’. Mother Maria Pierina promoted a devotion of reparation to the Holy Face each Tuesday in her congregation in obedience to Him.

Under her supervision the medal in all its detail was made in 1940. Following this Mother Pierina was troubled by visions of Satan exhibiting his rage and the medals to the floor before her, burning pictures of the Sacred Face and even savagely attacking and beating her. Despite adversity heaven blessed the work and the medals began to gain in fame and popularity. In 1940 during the Second World War there was a widespread distribution of the medal throughout Italy and especially to members of the armed forces for their protection and succour. In the words of the Virgin, the medal was to be a weapon for defense, a shield for courage, a token of love and mercy given by Our Lord. Soldiers, sailors and airmen were particularly drawn to this indication of Divine Protection and the devotion spread rapidly. The first of the medals struck was offered to Pope Pius XII. Our Blessed Lord Himself showed to the Holy Father that a special feast should be instituted in honour of His Holy Face. So, on 17 April 1958, Pope Pius instituted a feast to be observed each Shrove Tuesday (i.e. the Tuesday following Quinquagesima Sunday and before Ash Wednesday). In this way Lent would be approached with an awareness of the consequences of sin and its effect upon the Saviour.

Mother Pierina had died in on the night of 25/26 July 1945 without seeing this work come to fruition. A few years earlier she had written in her diary: ‘I feel a deep longing to live always united to Jesus; to love Him intensely because my death can only be a transport of love with my Spouse, Jesus.’
